This course is designed to provide focused education to help 'level up' your nursing knowledge to assist, in a team approach, with the care of pediatric patients during surges of acute, respiratory illness common in winter months. The course was developed by Specialty Nursing faculty at BCIT who are not only excellent educators, but also frontline nurses working right beside you.

This course was designed to provide focused education to prepare and advance frontline healthcare workers with the recent surges of acutely ill pediatric patients with respiratory-related presentations. The course was developed by Specialty Nursing faculty at BCIT who are not only excellent educators, but also frontline nurses working right beside you.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand key anatomical, physiological, developmental, and communication considerations for the approach to assessment and the safe care of pediatric patients of various ages
- Critically analyze the determinants of oxygen supply and demand, their interrelationships, and associated implications for end-organ perfusion and cellular oxygenation for pediatric patients
- Outline key pediatric-specific assessment strategies, including the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) and the Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS)
- Use a systematic approach to analyze pediatric arterial blood gasses and explain the significance of associated abnormal values and trends
- Compare and contrast the pathophysiology, symptoms, and expected management of common pediatric respiratory presentations including croup, bronchiolitis, asthma, and pneumonia
- Understand differences in the assessment of and management of respiratory distress and respiratory failure for pediatric patients of different ages
- Understand foundational knowledge about the monitoring, assessment, and evaluation strategies for infants and children receiving non-invasive and invasive ventilation
- Identify components of myocardial electrophysiology, conduction, and the normal ECG complex
- Demonstrate a systematic approach to ECG rhythm analysis and interpretation of normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms most commonly seen in pediatric care, including normal sinus rhythm, sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, and supraventricular tachycardia
- Identify key nursing interventions for the child with sinus bradycardia, sinus tachycardia, and supraventricular tachycardia
- Describe the three main types of dehydration in children, the severity levels of dehydration, and their signs, symptoms, common causes, and treatments
- Identify the most appropriate IV fluids for resuscitation and maintenance
- Describe the types, stages, and key nursing interventions for infants and children with shock
- Evaluate one’s own readiness to accompany a pediatric patient on an inter-hospital transfer based on the level of acuity and risk for patient decompensation
- Identify basic safety supplies to support a pediatric patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation on transportation to another hospital
