Course Overview
Healthy Childbearing Experiences and The Newborn, is the combined introductory theory course of the Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing Specialty Programs. This course explores a number of concepts that are foundational to the practice of both perinatal and neonatal nursing, and healthy childbearing experiences. Within the context of building partnerships, learners are exposed to holistic caring for childbearing women, their fetuses and newborns, and their families.

Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses.
In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, and professionalism.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Integrate knowledge of fetal growth, development, circulation, and wellbeing into the interpretation of antenatal/intrapartum nursing assessments, care and decision-making processes.
- Illustrate how nursing assessments, antenatal screenings, and specialized care, within the low-risk childbearing experience, influence the promotion of healthy outcomes.
- Reflect on the impact of various cultural, societal, and contextual influences on the woman's/pregnant person's and their family's health outcomes throughout the childbearing experience.
- Apply foundational Perinatal and Neonatal nursing knowledge to the care of women/pregnant people and families throughout low-risk pregnancies and childbirths to determine specialized care, provide education, and promote healthy outcomes.
- Describe the nurse's role in leveraging their specialty knowledge to promote, protect and support the physiologic processes of labour, birth, postpartum, and the neonatal transition to extrauterine life.
- Utilize knowledge of infant behaviour, vulnerability, and maternal/neonatal physiological changes in the postpartum period to determine specialized care.
- Apply foundational Perinatal and Neonatal nursing knowledge to the care of healthy dyads and families during low-risk postpartum to determine specialized care, provide education, and promote healthy outcomes.
- Summarize the role of the nurse in promoting, protecting, and supporting positive infant feeding experiences.
- Reflect on your own personal beliefs, values, and biases in the context of nursing care that promotes, protects, and supports positive experiences for families.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of resources and frameworks that can aid in assessment, clinical decision-making, and communication within Perinatal and Neonatal nursing practice.
- Apply principles of trauma informed, equity-oriented, and family-centred maternal and newborn care to the specialized care of families within the childbearing continuum.
