Course details

This 45 hour comprehensive course is designed to broaden the expertise of nurses and physicians who currently provide or will be providing pediatric sexual violence medical evaluation. The focus of this Canadian-based, basic to intermediate level training will be on caring for the sexually abused pediatric population. This evidence-based course will be interactive, case-based and provide practical opportunities for clinicians to obtain feedback on different practice elements including documentation. The target audience for this course are nurses who: (1) have received training as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner— Adult/Adolescent. (2) have been practicing for over 1 year in the area of sexual assault. (3) currently providing or will be providing service for pediatric sexual abuse/assault victims. (4) Physicians who are currently providing or will be conducting medical evaluation for pediatric sexual abuse/assault victims.

  • Admission to a Forensic credential program or permission of the Program Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Apply findings in the recent medical literature to the evaluation and management of suspected sexual abuse/assault.
  • Apply an understanding of the dynamics of sexual abuse.
  • Formulate an approach to the pediatric health history and rapport building in a child which incorporates medico-legal considerations.
  • Apply an understanding of the role of clinician consent and duty to report legislation as it relates to clinical practice.
  • Apply an evidence based approach to the interpretation of genital examination findings in children and adolescents.
  • Identify and incorporate evidence-based concepts for documentation and forensic evidence collection.
  • Apply issues related to transmission, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections to clinical practice.
  • Formulate an approach to the assessment of physical abuse-skin injuries in children with suspected sexual abuse.
  • Describe the role of the clinician in the criminal and family court setting as it applies to clinical practice.
  • Apply an understanding of trauma in children who have been sexually abused to clinical practice.
  • Identify the importance and concepts of non-offending care giver support.
  • Formulate a comprehensive approach to service delivery in complex cases including cases involving drug-facilitated sexual assault, internet luring, human trafficking, children with disabilities and cultural considerations.
