Course details
Building on the concepts presented in Pediatric Emergency Nursing Theory 1 (critical thinking, assessment, and level of urgency), students work through more advanced and complex chronic and acute pediatric emergency patient presentations. Students will continue to develop a deeper level of pediatric pathophysiology, assessment, and decision making related to a variety of applicable topics, such as: pediatric triage, various shock states, respiratory distress, cardiac anomalies, oncology, accidental poisoning, and DKA. Students will begin to explore more advanced pediatric emergency nursing skills than those presented in Theory 1.

Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Apply the characteristics of pediatric triage to a variety of emergent presentations.
- Describe the underlying pathophysiology, assessment, and anticipated treatment of a variety of complex health challenges in children, such as:
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Seizure disorders
- Increased ICP
- Hypovolemic shock
- Sepsis
- Outline special considerations for the emergency care of children in rural areas, including inter-facility transfer.
- Apply knowledge of the unique anatomy and pathophysiology of major body systems of pediatric patients to clinical findings in complex emergency presentations.
- Determine effective strategies for optimizing patient and family-centered care of children with special health care needs (CSHCN).
- Describe the nursing considerations, procedures, and equipment required for intraosseous (IO) device use in children.
- Outline the indications for, steps of, and pharmacological considerations for pediatric Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI).
- Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate pharmacological interventions for complex pediatric emergency patient presentations
- Apply the components of the pediatric emergency assessment framework to a variety of emergency and complex pediatric patient presentations.
- Apply the concepts of the oxygen supply and demand framework to a variety of emergent and complex pediatric presentations.
- Describe the components of the pediatric mental health assessment.
- Outline the general approach to a variety of pediatric mental health or behavioral emergencies.
- Outline key legal and ethical considerations in pediatric mental health emergencies.
- Identify special considerations for the emergency management and treatment of pediatric patients with various congenital and chronic illnesses, such as: hematological or oncological illness.
- Describe the role of interprofessional collaborative (IPC) practice in effective pediatric emergency care.
- Outline special considerations in the care of various neonatal emergencies.
- Outline the common signs of child maltreatment and appropriate emergency intervention.
