Course details
This course introduces the unique and highly specialized area of pediatric critical care nursing. Building on the concepts presented in Pediatric Nursing Theory 1, students work through advanced, complex chronic and acute pediatric critical care patient presentations, while considering children’s growth and development stages and the unique physiology of the different pediatric age groups. Students will continue to develop a deeper level of understanding of pediatric pathophysiology, assessment, and decision making related to a variety of health challenges experienced by the critically ill child or adolescent. In addition, students will explore further comprehensive assessment strategies (e.g., hemodynamic monitoring, arterial blood gas analysis, stress response and neurologic assessment) and strategies employed to optimize oxygen supply and demand balance in the critically ill pediatric patient (e.g., CPAP/BiPAP, haemodynamic monitoring, pain and sedation assessment, and fluid management).Finally students will be challenged to make clinical decisions and plan care for selected critically ill individuals. Family-centred care, relational practice and inter-professional practice, professionalism, communication, collaboration and partnership are core concepts threaded throughout this and all subsequent pediatric critical care courses.

- Describe the context of pediatric critical care nursing practice and recognize the unique experience of the critically ill pediatric patient and their family.
- Apply the concepts of family centered care and relational practice within the context of pediatric critical care settings.
- Describe the role of inter-professional collaborative practice within pediatric critical care contexts.
- Identify the unique anatomical and physiological characteristics of various pediatric body systems.
- Integrate principles of normal growth and development in the care of critically ill pediatric patient experiencing various health challenges.
- Describe the concepts of oxygen supply and demand during the care of the critically ill pediatric patient.
- Interpret multiple sources of information to comprehensively assess the status of the critically ill pediatric patient and inform clinical decision making.
- Incorporate information gained from systematic blood gas analysis into comprehensive assessment of the critically ill pediatric patient.
- Identify the principles of invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
- Integrate hemodynamic assessment data into comprehensive assessment of critically ill pediatric patient.
- Determine age-appropriate pain assessment strategies, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management techniques.
- Describe and demonstrate techniques for safe medication administration in pediatric critical care settings.
