Course Overview
Provides an overview of the occupational health and safety field and discusses how health and safety relate to an organization's overall management system. Introduces leadership commitment, open communication, and legal accountability as core concepts that form the basis for effective safety programs. Explores the wide variety of functions within the field and the resources available for the safety generalist. (This course is equivalent to OCHS 1000.)

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Provide an overview of the OH&S field and the role of the OH&S practitioner.
- Summarize the history of OH&S and describe key lessons learned from the early pioneers in the field.
- Outline the basic principles of occupational health and safety.
- Identify the founding principles of OH&S legislation and outline the similarities between jurisdictions.
- Describe the key components of a safety program.
- Describe the relationship between a successful safety program, effective leadership and communication, and a strong commitment to safety.
- List and briefly describe several resources available to OH&S practitioners.
- Describe how a safety system differs from a safety program and explain why the OH&S practitioner needs to be concerned with both.
