International Fees

International fees are typically three times the amount of domestic fees. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.

Course details

Building upon the fundamental principles of plane sound waves covered in BSCI 9060 – Building Science Acoustics, the course provides the advanced theory of 3-D nonplanar waves and its applications to noise control in the built environment including but not limited to buildings, roads, airports, and communities. Topics include spherical and cylindrical waves, piston radiation, refraction, diffraction, noise criteria/regulations, and general noise control measures. Each student is given an opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge of noise control by conducting research on a topic of his/her choice and presenting the outcome as a term paper and a technical presentation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Interpret the advanced theory of sound propagation in fully 3-D geometry such as spherical/cylindrical waves, piston radiation, refraction, and diffraction in the context of noise control
  • Assess noise problems commonly encountered in the built environment and develop effective noise mitigation strategies accordingly
  • Perform acoustic design and analysis for noise control using hand calculations and predictive software
  • Develop a range of acoustical measurements and tests according to ISO and ASTM standards
  • Propose the relevant noise criteria and regulations
  • Conduct applied research in noise control
  • Write a research report/journal paper and give a technical talk

Effective as of Winter 2024
