Focuses on the experience of the individual with end stage renal disease. Links pathophysiology of renal disease and treatment options to the lived experience of various individuals. Provides an understanding of the physiological, psychological and social impact of renal disease as it varies over the life span and with individuals.

Learning Outcomes

As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe common physiological, psychological, emotional, social characteristics of renal clients and the way these attributes impact the psycho-social meaning of renal disease for individuals.
  • Synthesize the concepts of self-management and chronic disease management for renal clients.
  • Describe the impact of co-morbid conditions on renal clients.
  • Explain the anatomy and physiology of healthy kidney function.
  • Explain the patho-physiology of kidney disease.
  • Reflect upon how your own nursing practice is influenced by values, beliefs, and assumptions regarding health, health promotion, chronic illness, treatment, compliance, and partnerships.
  • Discuss effective communication and interviewing skills that contribute to building relationship and trust as a nephrology nurse working with clients and families living with renal disease.
