This clinical course introduces learners to the care of infants experiencing common health challenges. This three-week clinical course takes place in a NICU and focuses on the following key areas of practice: Comprehensive Assessment, Clinical Judgement and Decision-Making, Integration of Theory to Practice, Reflective Practice, Collaboration, Professionalism, and Communication.

This three week clinical course (10 x 12 hour shifts) takes place in a NICU at scheduled times within the term dates. Students must be available for clinical placement at any time within the term dates. Current NRP and CPR is required. Current NRP and CPR is required. Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate safe and competent nursing care in the seven Key Areas of Practice: comprehensive assessment, clinical judgement and decision making, integration of theory to practice, reflective practice, collaboration, professionalism, and communication.
- Consistently perform a comprehensive assessment of an infant in the acute setting under the supervision of the clinical instructor/preceptor.
- Consistently demonstrate clinical decision-making skills using the Situated Clinical Decision Making Framework to plan care for infants and their families under the supervision of the clinical instructor/preceptor.
- Develop and utilize systematic inquiry in order to make clinical judgments within the context of caring for infants experiencing health challenges.
- Develop and use critical thinking skills to reflect on your own practice and learning.
- Effectively plan individualized nursing care for infants and their families, integrating theoretical knowledge in the practice areas of growth and development: medication administration, thermal management, nutrition, infection control, pathophysiology, and developmentally supportive and family-centered care under the supervision of the clinical instructor/preceptor.
- Develop and use collaborative interpersonal communication skills to establish partnerships with infants, families, and the health care team.
- Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation of nursing care.
- Practice in accordance with the BCCNM Professional and Practice Standards for Registered Nurses.
- Recognize learning needs and develop action plans for achieving success in personal development using reflective practice.
