Course Overview
This introductory specialty course is intended for registered generalist sonographers (CRGS, RDMS) employed in British Columbia, Canada. Students will learn how to differentiate muscle, tendon, nerve, fat, bursa, cartilage, and bone on ultrasound, as well as learn the protocols for scanning the Achilles, patellar, and rotator cuff tendons. We will cover some basic pathology, such as ganglion cysts, joint effusions, and basic tendinopathy, such as complete tendon tears.
Prerequisite(s)
- Must be a BC resident, registered, employed, and working Sonographer as musculoskeletal (MSK) upskilling and clinical first-steps are supported through a BCIT partnership with the provincial Health Authority. For example, potential students need to have graduated from an accredited sonography training program and hold the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS - AB/OB/GYN) or Canadian Registered Generalist Sonographer (CRGS) credentials to qualify for BCIT MSK sonography specialty training.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the complete requisite protocols, required images, measurements, patient positioning, and normal sonographic appearances of the musculoskeletal (MSK) structures of interest in a routine scan.
- Given an image, recognize anatomy, artifacts, and basic pathologic conditions when scanning an adult patient undergoing an MSK exam or procedure.
- Given an image or patient scenario, write an accurate technical impression by listing differential diagnoses using sonographic descriptors and medical terminology.
- Given a patient history, correlate ultrasound findings with other diagnostic imaging modalities including radiography, CT, NM, and MRI and apply knowledge of emerging technology in the Sonography discipline.
