Municipal and Industrial Waste Water Treatment EENG 7430

Environmental Engineering Course

International Fees

International fees are typically three times the amount of domestic fees. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.

Course details

This course covers the sources of municipal wastewater, factors that affect wastewater flow, measurement of wastewater flow and strength, effects of effluent discharges on the receiving environment, legislation, onsite treatment, screening, comminution, grit removal, flow equalization, the principles of primary sedimentation and secondary treatment including suspended growth, attached growth, and secondary clarification, effluent disinfection, and sludge processing. Practical and operational aspects will be emphasized. Course further discusses characteristics of industrial wastewater, waste minimization, pre-treatment requirements, flow and quality, quality equalization, neutralization, and oil-water separation. Sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment such as conserving space, energy and chemical use will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the factors and patterns that affect wastewater flow rates and constituent strength, and develop projections for wastewater flow and load based on service population.
  • Discuss the need for wastewater treatment as defined in provincial and/or federal legislation taking into consideration the effects of discharging wastewater into the environment, including the potential impacts of wastewater discharges on the receiving environment and dissolved oxygen sag analysis in streams.
  • Explain the methods of wastewater collection and treatment including centralized and de-centralized (onsite) systems.
  • Describe basic design and operation of wastewater preliminary, primary and secondary treatment unit processes.
  • Interpret wastewater disinfection alternatives.
  • Evaluate sludge processing options for a given application, considering the treatment objectives and cost effectiveness of the processing techniques.
  • Assess the impact of key industrial wastewater contaminants (heavy metals, other inorganic constituents, synthetic organic compounds, etc.) on the receiving environment.
  • Support sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment.

Effective as of Fall 2019
