​This course is an introduction to base building finishes as they apply to floors, walls, and ceilings, emphasizing the use of sustainable materials. Students will learn about local suppliers and manufacturers through guest lectures and field trips.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Research and source base building finishes for the interior built environments focusing on ecological and sustainable methods and materials.
  • Identify the characteristics and suitability of various base building finishes and installation methods.
  • Appropriately document basic specifications for materials.
  • Analyse existing material installations.
  • Identify characteristics of materials in terms of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).
  • Determine appropriate material selection for specific functional consideration and usage.
  • Estimate quantities of materials for budget pricing.
