Course details

This course is for prospective NDT technicians to introduce the engineering materials and the processes used during manufacturing. Topics include material properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, alloying, as well as casting, forging, extruding and welding processes. This M&P course is designed to meet the requirements of the NRCan Non-Destructive Certification Body (NCB) for CGSB-48.9712 certification. Students are required to use a calculator, apply basic trigonometry and use exponential functions. Students are required to have access to steel toed safety boots and safety glasses in the event a tour is scheduled.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the basic mechanical properties of materials.
  • Explain how the properties of metals are affected by grain structures and processing variables including hot working, cold working, annealing and heat treatment.
  • Utilize the iron-carbon diagram to describe phases in steels and cast irons.
  • Explain the purposes for various heat treatments of steels.
  • Describe how material defects can be introduced by different manufacturing processes.
