Course details

Lumber manufacturing has evolved significantly over the last several decades and includes complex processes and technology. The main driving forces behind this evolution are: an increased effort to achieve sustainable use of forest resources, implementation of automated processes and computerized controls to achieve higher levels log utilization, and a changing lumber market. This course provides an overview of the lumber industry landscape with specific emphasis on aspects that have a more direct impact on the processes and technology employed in sawmill plants. The topics explored include: production resources, sawmill operation units, wood products, and industry regulatory environment. Students engage in their learning through online activities. Students' knowledge is assessed through online discussions, quizzes, and the final exam as well as through practical projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the main aspects of the wood processing industry.
  • Describe the harvesting practices commonly used in the wood industry.
  • Identify the main products and by-products of the wood processing industry.
  • Describe the function of such processing units as log merchandizing, sawmill, kiln drying, planing / processing.
  • Describe the key attributes and measurements used to describe wood products.
  • Describe lumber regulations (US/Canada).
