Course Overview
This course has been replaced with COMP 2766. First level in a series of core Linux/Unix courses, designed to cover basic Linux/Unix concepts using the GNU/Linux operating system on the Intel platform. Topics include login procedures, the Linux/Unix shell, file and directory management, text editing, printing, e-mail, pipes and process control. Provides a solid foundation in a Linux/Unix environment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Log in and out of the operating system & explain the login process.
- Understand and explain the layers of the operating system.
- Access the many forms of online assistance available.
- Navigate the filesystem & manipulate files and directories.
- Edit text files using the vi editor.
- Use shell metacharacters to control command input and output.
- Manage processes and be able to terminate misbehaving ones.
- Modify and configure personal login environments.
