Course Overview
The purpose of this course is to help those working in complicated technologically intense businesses, and especially those involved in technology management, to understand and to function within that legal environment. To this end, we will look at the nature of the legal system as well as its institutions generally, and will also look at selected areas of law vital to the functioning of Canadian business. The course will also relate law to modern business practice, especially in the field of ethics.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the candidate will be able to:
- describe the Canadian legal system and explain how it works.
- discuss the history and major sources of Canadian law.
- describe the provincial and federal court structures and outline the judicial process involved when a dispute is taken to court.
- trace the development of the Canadian constitution including the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and discuss its impact on our technologically based society.
- identify the legal concepts and rules associated with specific areas of law including torts, contracts, secured transactions, employment and agency, partnership and corporations, negotiable instruments and intellectual property.
- describe the legal means of protecting technological innovations including licensing of use.
- explain how the law and legal process relate to ethical and moral considerations in business.
- display an understanding of the impact of environmental statutes and laws on business activities.
- discuss the practical implications of corporate responsibility.
