Course Overview
This course introduces students to the use of statistics as a tool for research in the health sciences. Topics covered include experimental design, standard and requirements of ethical research, descriptive statistics (organization and presentation of data), probability (discrete/continuous), estimation (confidence intervals and sample size), hypothesis testing (involving means and proportions), and linear regression (least squares fit and associated confidence/prediction intervals).
Prerequisite(s)
- No prerequisites are required for this course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the different types of medical study design along with their limitations
- Use summary statistics and standard data plots to investigate and describe similarities and differences between data on two or more groups of subjects in a medical study.
- Calculate probability results related to medical testing using Bayes' theorem, basic probability, and the medical test parameters: sensitivity and specificity
- Calculate p-values for a variety of hypothesis tests common in cardiology research.
- Explain the use of p-values in supporting research claims in cardiology and other health fields.
- Evaluate articles in clinical journals for statistical significance of the result and appropriateness of the statistical analysis being used.
- Use linear regression to determine a simple model for the relationship between predictor and response variables.
Effective as of Winter 2022
