Course details
This course provides a basic introduction to the concept of natural resources and environmental protection. It will introduce students to the different types of natural resources that exist in BC and how they relate to what we describe as "the environment." Students will gain a basic understanding of which governance bodies are responsible for managing various types of resources in BC and Canada, and will learn how these resources interact with and contribute to the provincial economy. Students will learn about some of the career trajectories that can be explored as an environmental professional.
Prerequisite(s)
- Grade 10 Math or equivalent AND Basic English Proficiency AND Competency with Computer.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define major categories of natural resources in British Columbia, and the sectors that use them (e.g. mining, forestry, fisheries).
- Understand why natural resources and the environment relate to all professions within British Columbia.
- Understand which agencies and bodies manage the various resource types in the province.
- Understand the relationship between natural resources and the provincial and national economies.
- Be able to describe some of the macro-scale threats to BC ecosystems, including climate change, invasive species, and habitat loss.
- Understand how biodiversity loss threatens human well-being.
- Learn about a variety of career pathways that intersect with natural resources and the environment, and what training is needed to pursue these.
