Course details
This course identifies characteristics of different light sources with emphasis on residential applications and examines the fundamentals of lighting design. Students will learn the foundations of lighting design with the goal of having a working knowledge of functional and aesthetic lighting solutions. Characteristics of different light sources will be examined and applications identified both in class and either through visiting a lighting facility or guest lectures. A residential reflected ceiling plan will be produced along with a generic lighting schedule.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify characteristics of different light sources for residential applications.
- Identify the theories that affect lighting design.
- Recognize the impact of human factors as they relate to the visual sense.
- Identify the effects of natural light in interior spaces.
- Apply accent, task, ambient and sparkle as layered lighting to a residential interior.
- Produce a residential reflected ceiling plan and generic lighting schedule.
- Evaluate the lighting of a space to determine character and mood.
