Course details

​This course will introduce students to the basic skills and concepts needed to conduct an investigation in a criminal or civil matter. Students will learn how to collect, document, and analyze evidence and information relevant to the investigation; and then make appropriate case related decisions based on the collected evidence and information. This course will outline the role of an investigator and the necessary steps an investigator must take in order to progress through an investigation from start to finish. This will include the initial examination of the scene or incident, the actual investigation, collection and documentation of evidence, interviewing witnesses, writing incident or investigative reports and providing testimony at legal proceedings such as a trial or tribunal. This course is for those wanting to learn how to conduct investigations of accidents and incidents involving the workplace, violations of professional regulations, company policies, or other legal and regulatory matters.​

  3. The co-instructor for this in-person (F2F) offering is Chuck McDonald. Class presentation/debate and participation will be held/marked live, so attendance is strongly recommended for success in the course. There is no required textbook and the instructors will distribute any course material on the hub. Students who have been accepted into a Forensics program where this course is a part of the matrix may register without any further approvals. Students who are not currently accepted in a Forensics program or, if this course is NOT part of your program matrix, please contact the Program Assistants for departmental approval at BCIT_Forensics@bcit.ca .

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the common types of investigations, their requirements and limitations, and how duties as an investigator differ in each situation.
  • Differentiate between the types of investigations conducted in the private and public sectors.
  • Apply the required elements of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act to routine investigative actions.
  • Determine what evidence can be collected legally for a given scenario in the private and public sectors.
  • Identify the important elements of information gathered to generate accurate conclusions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to formulate and carry out a comprehensive investigative plan.
