Course Overview
The Introduction to Measurement and Verification course is a collaborative, student-centered learning course. It introduces the rudimentary principles and procedures of measurement and verification to building energy modelers in order to enable them to have a comprehensive understanding of the connections between theoretical energy simulation and actual performance measurement and verification. Each week's lesson includes a 3 hours lecture. In this course, students are expected to learn how to design an M&V strategy and incorporate the actual performance data into the model to provide more meaningful energy use predictions for buildings. Topics include building energy management in general, overview of energy audit process, fundamental concepts of M&V, M&V processes specified in both IPMVP and ASHRAE Guideline 14, energy model calibration process, introduction to most commonly used energy measuring instruments, economic analysis and life cycle costing. The causes of variability in building energy performance between the model’s prediction and actual measurement will be discussed in the class, as well.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe and explain concepts and process of measurement and verification specified in IPMVP and ASHRAE Guideline 14.
- Autonomously develop appropriate measurement and verification strategy to effectively obtain key building energy performance indicators for model calibration.
- Perform engineering economic analysis of energy-efficiency measures proposed in the study.
- Identify the limits of accuracy of building energy performance predicted through simulation.
- Identify and interpret the causes of variability in building energy performance of between theoretical prediction and actual measurement and,
- Communicate them with design team to help prioritize energy conservation measures and GHG emission reduction strategies at the whole-building and at the local level.
