Course Overview
This course introduces the types of criminal investigations that are completed at municipal police departments. You will apply various structured analytical techniques and software applications used at various stages of the Crime Analysis Cycle to support crime-reduction initiatives and criminal investigations. You will learn how to prepare crime maps, charts, crime bulletins, and effective written reports, using software programs used in Canadian law enforcement.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the Intelligence Cycle process as it is used by crime analysts.
- Prepare intermediate crime maps using GIS software for use in crime analysis at the municipal level.
- Complete a basic cell phone analysis, such as frequency, association, and patterns of communications.
- Create tactical crime analysis bulletins and offender profiles for municipal detachments.
- Create a basic association and event flow chart using charting software, such as i2, for crime analysis at the municipal level.
- Develop and maintain an analyst notebook for an investigation and for later court testimony.
- Present a final analysis that includes a written and verbal presentation component.
