Course details

Information architecture is an extensive discipline involving the organization, labeling, navigation, and searching systems for web and interactive products that enable users to find and manage information more successfully. This foundation course addresses issues such as how web usability, user experience, and search engine optimization integrate into an effective information hierarchy. Students will construct mobile and web sitemaps, task diagrams and wireframes. A combination of lectures, in-class discussions, hands-on exercises, group work, student presentations, and tool demonstrations will be used throughout this course. Students will be assessed by a combination of quizzes, term project, group and individual projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Plan and develop a content strategy for web and mobile.
  • Recognize and apply Information Architecture principles to user-centred design.
  • Identify website, and an interactive project’s Information requirements.
  • Develop audience profiles, user interactivity scenarios and personas.
  • Organize, and label content for interactive projects.
  • Implement and manage a content inventory.
  • Research and create interactive navigation systems.
  • Interpret data context and apply metadata/SEO (Search Engine Optimization) principles for new media assets.
  • Prepare visual documentation such as: user boards, sitemaps, task flowcharts and wireframes.
  • Develop a website navigation in a CMS (Content Management System) to define content hierarchy.
  • Write an information architecture proposal.
