Course Overview
Industrial systems commences with a study of safety considerations for electrical power systems. The Canadian Electrical Code, building codes, and IEEE standards are used for assigned design projects in the areas of commercial and industrial power distribution, protective device co ordination and protective relaying, lighting design, and grounding system design. Projects will incorporate designing various components of industrial systems.

Prepare Single Line Drawings
Feeder Design For Industrial & Commercial Buildings
- Select conductor size based on CEC requirements.
- Calculate voltage drop of feeder.
- Determine short circuit rating of conductor.
- Determine protection of feeders.
- Identify cable types.
- Select conduit size.
Branch Circuit Design
- Identify types of branch circuits - lighting & motor.
- Identify essential components of each type of branch circuit.
- Design each type of branch circuit based on CEC requirements.
- Determine loading requirements of buildings.
Grounding Design
- Define grounding terms.
- Explain intent of grounding.
- Design electrical system and equipment grounding according to CEC rules and IEEE recommendation.
- Use IEEE recommendations for signal cable grounding.
Protective Devices
- Analyze requirements.
- Select and use fuses.
- Select and use breakers.
- Select and use various types of protective relays.
- Understand CEC rules for protection of feeders, branch circuits and transformers.
Fault Current
- Define symmetrical & asymmetrical fault.
- Perform fault current calculations at various parts of an electrical system.
Power Distribution Design
- Analyze different systems.
- Explain various types of radial systems.
- Explain various types of primary selective systems.
- Explain various types of secondary selective systems.
Substation Design
- Differentiate outdoor vs indoor.
- Select transformer types.
- Select primary protective devices.
- Select secondary protective devices.
- Use protective relaying for substations.
- Protect against surge voltage.
- Operate and use surge arrestors.
System Coordination
- Coordinate a typical industrial or commercial electrical system.
- Select all the required components.
- Plot curves of all selected protective devices.
- Analyze the coordination.
Lighting
- Define lighting terms and units.
- Analyze various lighting sources.
- Design indoor and outdoor lighting layout to IES standards.
- Interface Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to lighting controls.
Building Code
- Analyze building code requirements for electrical rooms and vaults.

- This course will be delivered 100% in-person at the BCIT Burnaby campus. Labs and tutorials to be scheduled outside of class hours, on or before the first class. Registrants who are not BTech Electronics students must have program head approval.
