Course details
This course covers the major areas of incident scene examination; from the management and control of the scene upon arrival, to the detection and collection of pertinent evidence; including the extraction of witness recorded evidence from digital devices (CCTV, cell-phones, etc.). Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of processing an incident scene from start to finish, including in-depth knowledge regarding the theory of scene searching, and in dealing with the entire range of scene specific evidence that can be located and recovered. Students will learn how to forensically photograph, and document incident scene exhibits and will be exposed to the practice of proper evidence detection, collection and documentation. Students will learn about the current forensically acceptable methods of incident scene processing techniques, which will be applied through hands-on practical exercises in a team setting.

This is a BLENDED (Hybrid) course. Due to the interactive nature, it will be ONLINE Apr 9 - June 21. April 11, April 25, May 9, May 23 and June 6th will be LIVE online for 1 hour online from 1100-1200. IN CLASS 2 days (Sunday June 9 AND Tuesday June 18 – you must attend both days). Other times, modules and can be accessed at students’ discretion. Each week allows access to a new module. PowerPoint pre recorded sessions will be offered on the days that are not live. There is no textbook required and the instructor will distribute the course material in class and online, however, they will email you before the start with further details. Students who have been accepted into a Forensics program where this course is a part of the matrix may register without any further approvals. Students who are not currently accepted in a Forensics program or, if this course is NOT part of your program matrix, please contact the Program Assistants for departmental approval @ BCIT_Forensics@bcit.ca .

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the various types of physical evidence that might be present at both an indoor & outdoor incident scene.
- Apply proper techniques to maintain control and security of an incident scene.
- Demonstrate the proper detection, collection, and preservation of physical evidence at an incident scene.
- Explain the various means of scene documentation available and the strengths and weaknesses of each.
- Perform forensic photography and distinguish how it differs from conventional photography.
- Given a simulated incident scene, demonstrate the correct protocol in depicting the scene photographically.
- Explain the personal safety & security considerations applicable to each technique considered or situation encountered.
- Apply proper search & canvasing techniques to locate witnesses and sources of video, audio, and other digital evidence.
