Hemodynamic Monitoring and Diagnostics provides a systematic review of the current technologies used to determine the cardiovascular and pulmonary status of the cardiac surgery patient. This course describes the principles of the technology and how to appropriately interpret the acquired data so as to assess the status of the cardiac surgery patient.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Discriminate the physiology of the heart as related to the cardiac cycle and chamber pressures.
  • Differentiate the physical assessment techniques of the cardiovascular system.
  • Analyze the technical components of the hemodynamic monitoring system.
  • Assess
    • arterial pressure monitoring
    • central venous pressure monitoring
    • pulmonary artery pressure monitoring
    • cardiac output monitoring
    • mixed venous saturation monitoring
  • Interpret hemodynamic and ECG monitoring in patients with cardiac disease.
  • Critically analyze the principles of Radiography (X-Ray) as pertaining to the assessment of a patient with cardiac disease.
