Course details

​This course provides an introduction to the principles of green building and ecocities through a review of select projects, rating systems and sustainability frameworks. The course will develop student's understanding of the current context of green building and sustainable design in British Columbia, including the business case for green building and the ecological principles for the planning and renewal of cities. Students will become familiar with participatory, integrated design processes, and the coordination of green building activities. The course will include a review of green building rating systems with an emphasis on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED v4) Rating System, and the Living Building Challenge. Students will participate in weekly discussions, reading assignments and group activities that explore the topic of green building and sustainable communities, best practices and the relationship between various concepts and approaches.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe current contextual issues that influence sustainable design in British Columbia.
  • Evaluate the merits of green building practices at various scales of the built environment, including regions, districts, new and existing buildings.
  • Explore the imperatives and some applied strategies for the key areas of sustainable design including Site and Landscape; Water Management and Conservation; Energy; Materials and Health; Indoor Quality and Quality of Place, at the regional, district and building scale.
  • Describe the significance of accounting for performance in green buildings and various green building rating systems, with an emphasis on LEED v4.
  • Use Living Building Challenge (LBC) as an indication of "true sustainability" in group projects.
  • Interpret the function of Life Cycle Assessment as a decision making tool for material, systems and technology selection.
  • Explain the planning principles required for the long-term sustainability of cities (including ecocity indicators), and how these principles affect transportation, infrastructure, and the well-being of the inhabitants and the bioregion.
  • Discuss how cities contribute to local, regional and global sustainability and how policy shapes the built environment.
