Course Overview
This course presents an overview of fundamental graphical techniques necessary for reading and production of working drawings, and introduces a variety of drafting terminology. Subject materials for the course are drawn from the civil engineering industry. Topics include tools and lines, lettering, scales, layout, dimensioning, geometric constructions, orthographic projections, and sections.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and correctly use basic drafting tools.
- Draw and interpret standard line types.
- Produce neat, legible Gothic lettering using an Ames Lettering Guide.
- Identify and use metric, architect's, and civil engineer's scales.
- Discuss terms and definitions related to drawing layout.
- List the basic information required on a drawing.
- Add dimensions, general or local notes to a drawing in accordance with standard practice.
- Apply straight line geometry and geometry of arcs and circles to technical drawings.
- Construct regular polygons and ellipses.
- Describe the concept of orthographic projection and create a multiview drawing of a simple object in accordance with industry standards.
- Explain the terms cutting plane and sectional view.
- Describe and draw standard callouts used for sections and details on civil and structural engineering drawings.
