Course details

​This course will provide you with a foundational knowledge of fraud and financial crime investigation techniques. The course will begin with an overview of the types and trends of fraud and financial crime in Canada. You will learn about various statutes and case law commonly used to guide investigations. Crime theories will be presented to assist in the deterrence, detection, investigation and prediction of fraud and financial crime. You will use case studies to learn how to apply legislation, case law, and crime theory to initiate and plan a forensic investigation from initial incident to resolution. ​Concepts of risk mitigation will be introduced, and will be expanded upon throughout the program.​

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the types, trends and investigative challenges of various types of fraud and financial crime within Canada.
  • Apply the appropriate legal statutes for various fraud and financial crimes to a criminal fact pattern.
  • Apply crime theory to the deterrence, detection, investigation and prediction of fraud and financial crime.
  • Prepare an investigation strategy for a criminal fact pattern relating to a fraud or financial crime, including strategies on mitigating risks during the course of the investigation.
