Course Overview
This course is intended for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Police/Law Enforcement, Investigators, and Attorneys who work with victim of interpersonal violence or who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training and who are new or returning to their roles as Forensic Nurse Examiners. Prerequisite baseline understanding of forensic sciences required. Students will learn about the seriousness of mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) from a medical and legal perspective, how to identify mTBI in cases of interpersonal violence, assess for injuries and symptoms, general medical management and forensic documentation specific to this type of injury from interpersonal violence. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled "Forensic Examination of Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries".
Prerequisite(s)
- FSCT 7840 OR Currently working/returning to work in field of health care, law enforcement or investigation specific to victims of interpersonal violence OR by permission of the forensics department.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the seriousness and consequences of mTBI as an aspect of interpersonal violence from both a medical and legal perspective.
- Conduct and document an accurate forensic/medical history of cases involving known or suspected mTBI.
- Conduct a medical-forensic examination and interview of a person with known or suspected mTBI from violence.

- This 0.5 credit course is online. There will be a 3 hour livestream session on Tues, Feb 25, 2025, 1300-1600 (1:00pm - 4:00pm PST). Attendance is mandatory for the livestream session. Students must complete the asynchronous module before attendance at the live session. There is no required textbook.
