Course details

This course allows those with little or no knowledge of financial management to study the various methods of optimizing the economic position of a firm. It provides students with a conceptual understanding of the financial decision-making process in a business context and an appreciation of the impact that financial decisions have on value creation by focussing on the management and allocation of financial resources within the firm.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the structure of capital markets and their function within the Canadian economy.
  • Describe the concept of shareholder value maximization.
  • Identify the role of valuation in the capital markets using a basic securities valuation model.
  • Appraise a firm's financial performance using ratios based on financial statements.
  • Evaluate projected financial statements to make managerial decisions.
  • Examine the trade-offs involved in current asset management.
  • Identify the characteristics of different sources of short term and long term financing.
  • Construct a capital budgeting framework and interpret its results.
  • Apply cash budgeting as a manager in a business entity.
  • Analyze cash flows in a valuation context using time value of money concepts.
