BCIT's Fast Track Education for Front Line Registered Nurses and other Health Care Providers is a course designed to 'level up' your knowledge to assist, in a team approach, with acute overflow in hospitals. It is specifically targeted at RNs and other health care providers caring for patients requiring telemetry monitoring, high acuity care and critical care including mechanical ventilation. This is a self-directed course, so you can work through the content at your own pace.​

Learning Outcomes

This course has three different pathways you may choose to travel depending on your needs. Upon completion of all pathways students will be able to:

  • Outline the components the Oxygen Supply and Demand framework.
  • Outline the components of a Comprehensive Assessment.
  • Interpret and analyze a variety of arterial blood gas (ABG) results.
  • Outline the components of hemodynamic monitoring systems.
  • Describe the basic management of patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring and troubleshooting common associated problems.
  • Outline normal myocardial electrophysiology and conduction.
  • Identify the components of a normal electrocardiogram complex.
  • Perform systematic analysis of sinus, atrial, and ventricular rhythms.
  • Define preload, afterload and contractility.
  • Outline the effect of various cardiac rhythms on hemodynamics.
  • Identify basic nursing interventions for sinus, atrial, and ventricular rhythms.
  • Outline basic normal respiratory anatomy and physiology.
  • Describe the basic management of patients requiring non-invasive ventilation and troubleshooting common associated problems, for:
    • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).
    • Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP).
    • Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV).
  • ​Outline the basic management of patients requiring invasive ventilation and troubleshooting common associated problems.
  • Describe common modes of mechanical ventilation.
  • Define hypovolemic, cardiogenic, and septic shock.
  • Outline key anticipated interventions for patients experiencing hypovolemic, cardiogenic, and septic shock.
  • Describe the potential impacts of COVID-19 on the respiratory and cardiovascular system.
