- International Fees
International fees are typically 3.12 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
Course Overview
Introduces fundamental concepts of surveying with applications for applied waste management and contaminated sites. Topics include an introduction to the survey methodology, survey instrumentation, methods for determining horizontal positions and elevations, including position determination using GPS satellite technology. This course will introduce the learner to some of the sampling techniques and analytical methods used to determine common pollutants in groundwater, sediment and soil. Major industrial pollution issues, typical chemical species, and environmental partitioning are discussed during the lecture periods. Field and lab safety, the use of field equipment in accordance with proper procedures are covered in the laboratory periods. The sampling exercises include: soil and ground water sampling techniques as they would pertain to using a drill rig, backhoe and hand augers; ground water sampling from existing installations, development and testing of monitoring wells.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Perform slope and sea level distance reductions using basic survey methodology concepts.
- Apply established surveyors' levelling skills to determine elevation differences and carry out a topographic survey using a total station.
- Use the Global Positioning Satellite System to determine various location coordinates.
- Appraise the complexity of pollution issues and environmental chemistry with emphasis on chemicals' fugacity and environmental partitioning.
- Critically analyze environmental issues in order to select appropriate sampling and analytical methods to quantitatively and qualitatively assess the magnitude of environmental contamination/pollution.
- Demonstrate the use of sampling techniques and to determine common pollutants in groundwater, sediment and soil.
- Prepare field and laboratory reports as well as the basics of a site investigation report.
- Use the equipment and devices applied in site investigation aspects of field safety and operations, common soil
- Apply ground water investigative methodologies.
Effective as of Fall 2019
