Course details

Electrofishing is a technique where an electric current is used to attract and stun small fish in freshwater ecosystems for the purpose of assessing the size and diversity of fish populations. In this course, students will be trained in the safe and effective operations of electrofisher units.​

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the use of backpack electrofishing as a fish capture/inventory method.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely use all components and features of an approved backpack electrofisher unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, test, and use all mandatory and additional safety features of an approved backpack electrofisher unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to correctly use all personal protective equipment necessary to safely participate in an electrofishing field operation.
  • Understand and apply concepts of electrical theory applicable to electrofishing to select electrofisher settings for safe and effective fish capture.
  • Understand and demonstrate electrofishing field techniques, safe operation of equipment, and safety procedures in the event of an emergency or other incident.
  • Understand and demonstrate appropriate fish handling practices and recognize potential causes of fish injury or death and the techniques used to minimize these negative effects.
