Course details

This course provides students with the foundational knowledge essential to interpreting cardiac tests and procedures. This course introduces the student to ECG interpretation by discussion of the basis of ECG, principles of 12-lead interpretation, electrical axis, conduction delays, hypertrophy, ischemia, infarction, and miscellaneous effects on ECG. There is also a brief introduction to artificial pacemakers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the standard 12 leads of routine electrocardiography.
  • Describe the components of the ECG waveforms and how they relate to the conduction system
  • Calculate measurements of ECG intervals, complexes and segments
  • Systemically analyze normal versus abnormal ECG tracings
  • Identify conduction delays an hypertrophic changes on an ECG
  • Describe myocardial ischemia, injury and infarction and identify their corresponding ECG changes
  • Describe and identify some of the miscellaneous effects (e.g., electrolyte imbalances) on ECG tracings.
  • Identify indications for pacing.
  • Describe pacemaker function at an introductory level
  • Identify normal and abnormal pacemaker function on an ECG
  • Describe reasons for applying a magnet and the effects of magnet application on the pacemaker
