- International Fees
International fees are typically 3.12 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
Course Overview
Learners build knowledge related to supporting oxygen supply and demand balance for critically ill patients by exploring theory of mechanical ventilation, advanced oxygen supply and demand assessment, and management of metabolic and oxygen demand. The remainder of the course focuses on pathophysiology, assessment and management of a variety of 'single-system' critical illnesses presented within narrative cases of patients and families in a variety of critical care settings. Narrative cases focus on acute kidney injury, acute respiratory failure and care of chronically, critically ill patients/family, and hemodynamic instability (including shock states) arising from hypovolemic shock, acute decompensated heart failure, and SIRS/sepsis. The narrative cases also provide context for learners to build understanding of patients' and families' experiences of critical illness, develop clinical decision-making processes that support effective patient and family care, and to build understanding of interprofessional collaborative practice within critical care environments. Please note, learners must be Registered Nurses to take this course. Please note: You must achieve 75% or greater to register in the next Critical Care Nursing course, NSCC 7420.

Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Explain theoretical concepts used to determine and manage oxygen supply and demand balance for critically ill patients including mechanical ventilation, advanced oxygen supply and demand assessment, and metabolic and oxygen demand.
- Apply theory of mechanical ventilation, advanced oxygen supply and demand assessment, and metabolic and oxygen demand, to determine and manage oxygen supply and demand balance for critically ill patients.
- Explain pathophysiology and relevant clinical presentation of patients experiencing selected single system critical illnesses including acute respiratory failure, chronic critical illness, acute kidney injury, hemodynamic instability including shock states, hypovolemic shock, acute decompensated heart failure, and sepsis.
- Utilize evidence informed guidelines and oxygen supply and demand theory to critically analyze, make decisions, and plan care for patients and families experiencing selected single system critical illness (including acute respiratory failure, chronic critical illness, acute kidney injury, hemodynamic instability including shock states, hypovolemic shock, acute decompensated heart failure, and sepsis).
- Analyze the contribution of family-centred care and interdisciplinary collaborative practice to effective patient and family care.
Effective as of Spring/Summer 2023
