Course Overview
This course provides insight into the architecture, components, and operations of routers, switches and wireless devices in a small network. Students learn how to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality. By the end of this course, students will be able to configure and troubleshoot networks with technologies such as static routing, virtual LANs (VLANs), inter-VLAN routing, Dot1q trunking, , Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Stateless Address Auto Configuration (SLAAC), Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP), port security, standard access control lists, and device discovery protocols. Students work with both IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting. First hop redundancy and basic Wireless LAN (WLAN) configuration are also covered Students must have access to a Windows based multi-media computer.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Perform basic configuration of Cisco routers and switches
- Describe routing tables and their search structure
- Code static and default routes
- Describe Ethernet switching operations
- Configure Virtual LAN operations
- Configure VLAN trunks between switches
- Configure Virtual Trunking Protocol (VTP) parameters
- Optimize STP operations in a multi-switch environment
- Implement IPv4 and IPv6 functionality using static routing
- Implement secure remote access to routers and switches
- Provide first hop redundancy to hosts connected to a switch
- Implement a WLAN using a wireless router and a Wireless LAN Controller (WLC)
