Course details

This course builds up on Cargo 2 and covers Canadian and International regulations pertaining to the safe carriage of cargoes on merchant vessels. The knowledge of the safe handling, stowage, and securing of cargoes, along with the associated equipments, is also covered in this course. The types of cargoes covered include cargoes carried on deck, containers, bulk solids, bulk liquids and gases, dangerous, hazardous, and harmful cargoes, and other general cargoes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the features of vessels transporting different types of cargoes.
  • Plan cargo stowage and carriage to comply with the relevant Codes and Regulations.
  • Plan a passage to comply with the Load Line Convention.
  • Describe the various documents involved in cargo carriage and their importance.
  • Prepare the vessel to load various types of cargoes with the objective of minimizing damage to the cargo and/or vessel.
  • Apply knowledge of ship and terminal communications and pollution prevention communications.
  • Apply the Code of Safe Working Practices and Cargo, Fumigation and Tackle Regulations, and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
  • Explain cargo gear and inspection procedures.
  • Take suitable action when cargo has shifted or has been damaged/lost.
