Course details
This course takes place on campus in a lab learning environment and will introduce students to the knowledge, skills, and equipment to be used in the clinical portion of the program. Students will gain introductory skills in the areas of electrocardiograms, Holter monitor hook-ups, analysis, and exercise tolerance testing. They will be given the experience to incorporate knowledge gained from CARD 2202, Cardiology Diagnostic Testing and Methodology. Students will develop skills in patient care techniques, communication, and professional practice. Students will practice in the classroom, and the lab environment. The lab environment will also include activities in our simulated lab where students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their acquired skill set using simulated high fidelity manikins. ECG interpretation skills will be reviewed, and practiced in the classroom setting, and within the lab environment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the necessary professional practices involved in the interaction with patients, technologist, physicians, and all other allied health professionals in the health care setting.
- Perform basic equipment operation, and troubleshooting techniques for the cardiac machines.
- Develop basic skills in the recording and analysis of electrocardiograms including alternate lead placements.
- Develop basic skills in Holter monitor hook-ups (including event monitors) and disconnects, focusing on skin preparation.
- Introduce Holter monitor downloading, and Holter scanning techniques.
- Introduce and demonstrate principles of the basic skills involved in exercise tolerance testing including manual blood pressure and acquiring oxygen saturation.
- Develop basic patient care skills necessary in the clinical environment, including professionalism with patients, exercising universal precautions, patient positioning and transfers.
- Prepare a simulated patient by acquiring a patient history, and assess patient status measuring blood pressure using an ambulatory blood pressure monitor, oxygen saturation, height and weight.
- Effectively communicate within the health care environment with both patients and coworkers in the simulated lab.
- Explain the purpose and expectations of both the national and provincial Cardiology Technology bodies.
- Describe professional behavior including the importance of patient confidentiality, conflict resolution, and engagement with both patients and staff.
- Demonstrate ability to interpret electrocardiograms, and recognize critical criteria.
