Course Overview
The Building Energy Modelling 2 is a collaborative, student-centered learning course. It introduces advanced knowledge and skills required to perform advanced level building energy analysis. Each week's lesson includes a 2.0 hours lecture session, and a 1.0 hours lab/workshop session. In the lecture section, students will learn how to model the building envelope and mechanical systems that are introduced in Advanced Building Envelope and HVAC systems course using three different computer simulation tools, respectively (DesignBuilder, IES-VE, and OpenStudio). These systems include among others: variable air volume systems, VRF systems, comprehensive hydronic heating/cooling systems, waste heat recovery systems, and natural ventilation systems. The basic features and overall structure as well as some selected subprograms and their applications of these simulation tools will be introduced and discussed. The advanced modelling skills including indoor thermal comfort simulation, parametric analysis and model debugging will be demonstrated in the lecture section as well through examples. Three instructors, each with first-hand industry experience with these tools will teach in this course. In the in-class lab/workshop section, students will be put into practice what they have learned in the lecture session.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Carry out the advanced analysis of building systems to assess the energy use and the associated GHG emissions.
- Autonomously conduct more in-depth investigation into building energy performance by performing parametric analysis for design alternatives in building envelope, and M.E.P. systems.
- Assess the interaction between building envelope and HVAC systems including examining the impacts of different envelope and HVAC systems on building thermal behaviors and energy performance.
- Devise workarounds to model complex features, systems or components that are not readily characterized in software.
- Interpret simulated results to, and communicate the key findings with building design.
- Present simulation results and findings in a clear and understandable manner, in both a written and public presentation.
Effective as of Fall 2022
