Course Overview
Students in this introductory course will learn how to identify normal breast anatomical structures and identify variations in tissues due to age, pregnancy, and breast density on ultrasound. They will also learn the sonographic features of benign conditions and common pathologies. Students will also discuss the unique patient care and patient management strategies including targeted vs whole breast ultrasounds, mammograms, MRI, breast biopsies, and the ACR – BI-RADS® reporting system.
Prerequisite(s)
- This specialty course is intended for a cohort group of registered generalist sonographers (CRGS, RDMS) employed in British Columbia, Canada.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Recognize normal breast anatomy, anomalous, pathologic conditions, and their spatial anatomic relationships as visualized by ultrasound or schematic diagrams. (5.3g, 5.3h, 5.3i).
- Given a clinical scenario explain how to investigate abnormal findings on breast sonographic exams. (5.3j).
- Explain how to modify the examination based on provided patient symptoms, clinical history, laboratory results, and sonographic findings while integrating knowledge of disease processes. (5.1a, 5.1c, 5.1e, 5.2a, 5.2b, 5.3k).
- Explain how to appropriately respond or manage specific patient care concerns during gynecologic sonography exams in a given scenario. (1.1h, 1.3b).
- Describe the requisite protocols and images required for complete breast imaging exams and how to set up the room and patient to ensure patient dignity. (3.1f, 4.1a, 4.1b, 4.2a, 4.2b,5.1d, 5.3b, 5.3d, 5.3l).
- Formulates and communicates an accurate technical impression and differential diagnosis using sonographic descriptors and medical terminology based on provided sonographic images. (1.1k, 1.2a, 1.2b, 1.2c, 1.2e, 5.4a, 5.4b, 5.4d, 5.4e, 5.4g).
- Explain the different procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.
- Differentiate the pros and cons between sonography and other imaging modalities when imaging the breast.
- Discuss SMPBC and Bi-Rads reporting systems.
