Course Overview
This course aims to develop the skills and knowledge of individuals working for Road and Bridge Maintenance contractors currently delivering services throughout the 28-different services area in British Columbia. Maintenance services obligations are established through long term contractual agreements between the Province of British Columbia, and the various Maintenance Contractors. In this course you will learn how to undertake a comprehensive inspection program, which is one of the requirements in maintenance agreements. You will also learn standardized inspection procedures, terminology and deficiency identification to support your inspection work. The course covers off basic materials used in the construction of bridges, large culverts, and retaining walls. Structure types, design features and critical components common to many structures are explained to provide you with the knowledge to assess the impacts of deterioration and damage that commonly occur. This course includes a field guide to help you identify components common to all structures and categorize the type and severity of damage or deterioration through a standardized rating system. The field guide ensures a measure of consistency to the inspection process which is critical when assessing both safety implications, informing maintenance programs and when necessary, making recommendations on rehabilitation interventions.
