Course Overview
Introduces the latest versions of the Esri Desktop GIS software family and data models. Students use Desktop GIS software to create and edit GIS data, and perform mapping, data management and geographic analysis. Successful completion of this course will give you a background in GIS concepts, help you to operate the basic components of the Esri Desktop GIS software, and assist you in planning and executing a GIS project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student should be able to:
- Describe the essential components and architecture of commercial vector-based GIS software.
- Describe the format and topological concepts of common Vector GIS data models.
- Perform the steps for a successful GIS project, from planning to completion.
- Construct a GIS database using spatial data in digital formats.
- Create new spatial relationships by editing existing spatial data using a variety of tools.
- Perform spatial analysis of geographic data, using buffering, spatial overlays and spatial update operations.
- Perform a tabular analysis of geographic data by creating new attributes, designing selection sets and joining and relating tables.
- Generate cartographic elements and symbology.
- Design a map which will clearly outline the results of your analysis.
