Course details

This course is designed to meet the specific needs of Architectural & Building Engineering Technology. Emphasis is placed on good problem solving techniques and practical applications. Topics include kinematics, statics and dynamics, work and energy, fluid mechanics, simple harmonic motion, resonance, waves & sound. There is also a practical laboratory component that teaches proper measurement and data analysis techniques, the use of computer data acquisition and analysis software, and technical report writing

Learning Outcomes

From the lecture portion of the course, the student will demonstrate his/her comprehension of the material by successfully:

  • Solving quantitative, practical problems using a logical and systematic approach that involves: free body diagrams, selecting suitable equations based on an understanding of the physical principles that apply to the situation, algebraically solving for the unknown quantity in the equation(s), substitution of values (with units) into the equation, and presentation of the final answer with correct significant figures and units.
  • Answering qualitative, written and multiple choice questions that test the conceptual understanding of the physical principles that apply to a situation.

From the laboratory portion of the course, the student will have the ability to:

  • Properly use scientific instruments to obtain accurate measurements when operating technical equipment.
  • Interpret and analyze data using computer software.
  • Obtain an estimate of the uncertainty in a calculated quantity.
  • Write a clear, concise, and properly formatted technical report.
