- International Fees
International fees are typically 3.12 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
Course Overview
This course covers airtightness and low-TEDI enclosure construction for zero energy/emissions or Passive House buildings. The course will help learners develop their knowledge of airtightness and low thermal demand (low-TEDI) building enclosures with study of wood-frame construction. Students will develop a firm understanding of assembly details, material selection and compatibility, construction approaches, sequencing and coordination, for zero energy/emissions or Passive House buildings. Key topics include the airtightness, high R-value enclosure details, thermal bridging, assembly interfaces, windows, mechanical and electrical penetration, and embodied carbon of materials. This course is offered online with live virtual lectures and self-paced learning in the BCIT Learning Hub.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the fundamentals of building science (heat, air, and moisture transmission) in the context of various near Zero Energy Building assemblies.
- Describe the requirements and best practices for airtightness planning, coordination, and documentation from design through to construction and testing.
- Compare air barrier material properties (rigid boards, membranes, tapes, components, etc.) in their application as an air barrier system.
- Compare assembly material properties (insulation, structural elements, fasteners, etc.) in their application as part of a thermal barrier.
- Describe the installation details for various above and below-grade air barrier solutions to achieve the airtightness (ACH) metrics of the BC Energy Step Code and the Passive House standard.
- Describe the installation details for various above and below-grade highly-insulated and thermal bridge-free assembly solutions to achieve the metrics of the BC Energy Step Code and the Passive House standard.
- Compare the design, performance, constructability, and durability of several different air barrier and low-TEDI approaches.
- Explain the requirements for airtightness planning, preparation, and execution of airtightness testing for Part 9 and Part 3 buildings .
Effective as of Winter 2022
