Course details
An introduction to air-conditioning systems, covering fundamentals, selection and applications of air handling units and air distribution systems of which the design and sizing include selecting terminal units, applying equal friction method to ductwork, applying fan laws to fans, and applying constant air volume (CAV) and variable air volume (VAV) principles to single-zone as well as multi-zone control. This course may be eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant. Students register themselves into the course, then apply for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant to cover payment, if eligible.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Design and select basic components of air-conditioning systems including fresh air intakes, filters, heating/cooling coils, supply air fans and air terminals.
- Describe differences between packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC) and custom-design built air handling systems.
- Design ductwork based on equal-friction method used by the industry.
- Describe the different types of fans used for air-conditioning.
- Select fans with regard to system operating conditions, flow resistance, optimal efficiency and power requirements.
- Describe multi-zone control terminal units used in air-conditioning installations.
- Apply single-zone and multi-zone control air-conditioning systems for various applications.
- Select and place terminal units for delivering air to conditioned spaces.
