An introduction to the sources, types and qualities of aggregates, and the methods used to find them. Applications of aggregates and the codes governing them are discussed.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
Module 1 - Origin of Aggregates
- Define construction aggregates.
- Describe the origin and process of aggregate formation.
- Recognize suitable sources for natural aggregates.
- Explain the methods of manufacturing artificial aggregates.
Module 2 - Properties of Aggregates
- Describe and explain the following properties of aggregates; shape, size, texture, density, absorption, strength, toughness and soundness.
- Demonstrate the properties of aggregates as they pertain to construction materials.
- Relate the properties of aggregates to the origin of aggregates.
- Identify the proper tests required to determine a specific property of an aggregate.
Module 3 - Aggregate Source Development
- Describe typical aggregate bearing landforms.
- Lay out a program for subsurface investigation of a proposed deposit.
- Describe a practical method and/or techniques to determine quality and quantity of a proposed deposit.
- Calculate the usable quantity of aggregates in a proposed deposit.
Module 4 - Specification and Codes
- Name the major standards pertaining to aggregate properties.
- Use the various standards as they pertain to aggregate use with differing materials.
- Relate the purpose of standards for construction materials.
