Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Relate sources and types of errors to survey instruments and measurement techniques, including how to take care of the influence of the errors.
  • Interpret accuracy standards and specifications as they relate to terrestrial, GNSS surveys and mapping.
  • Translate standards and specifications (such as maximum allowable misclosures) into a choice of surveying equipment and field procedures for 1D, 2D or 3D positioning surveys.
  • Design by pre-analysis (including computer simulation), the appropriate combination of survey techniques (traditional and GNSS) and equipment for field data collection to satisfy specific quality requirements (in 1D, 2D and 3D).
  • Employ standard field techniques and procedures to calibrate and test survey equipment.
  • Evaluate equipment testing and calibration results to determine the accuracy, precision and limitations of the equipment.
  • Analyze the positioning accuracy and suitability of three-dimensional coordinating systems, which includes terrestrial laser scanning systems and close-range photogrammetric methods.
  • Explain some aspects of deformation monitoring techniques (geodetic and geotechnical) and analyses with consideration for systematic and random influences on measurement systems.
  • Describe the techniques of alignment and underground (tunnelling and mine) surveys.
  • Collect and process data related to gyro azimuth determination, including necessary reductions to obtain astronomic and grid azimuths.
  • Discuss the capabilities and limitations of some survey techniques and instrumentation in transferring positions and orientations underground in underground mines or in tunneling projects.
  • Assess horizontal and vertical control networks for tunneling surveys with consideration for breakthrough errors.

Effective as of Fall 2017
