Course Overview
This course builds upon the concepts presented in NSNE 7100, 7200, 7300, 7900, and 7911. This course is offered over twelve weeks of guided independent study. A case-study format will be used to address the care of infants experiencing life-threatening health challenges, including aspiration, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, sepsis, multiorgan dysfunction, abdominal wall defects, hydrops, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and extremely low birth weight. Treatment modalities such as venous and arterial access, various modes of invasive respiratory support, pharmacological support, and blood products are examined using a developmentally supportive and family-centered care approach.

- RN practicing licensure in a provincial/territorial college of Registered Nurses

- Identify the life-threatening health challenges that can lead to multiorgan dysfunction syndrome in infants.
- Determine appropriate methods of invasive respiratory support.
- Identify appropriate treatment options when caring for infants with life-threatening health challenges.
- Apply the principles of developmentally supportive and family-centred care within the context of caring for infants with life-threatening health challenges.
- Identify and examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents commonly used to treat critically ill infants.
- Demonstrate safe and competent nursing care of infants experiencing life-threatening health challenges and various modes of invasive respiratory support.
- Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation of nursing care.
- Practice in accordance with Professional Standards for Registered Nurses.
