Course Overview
This course enables students to effectively identify and utilize the complex systems and applications used in the accounting sector. Students will gain hands-on knowledge that will enable them to analyze and implement accounting systems within the framework of modern business environments, including privacy, security, and control systems needed to ensure client confidentiality and strategic advantage through the use of IT. This course qualifies as a prerequisite for entrance into the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Professional Education Program (PEP).

- Contrast general Business Information Systems & Architectures
- Differentiate the nature, type, and uses of information within an entity
- Evaluate processing modes (batch, online, etc.)
- Outline the types of networks (local area, wide area, wireless)
- Select key hardware components of a system
ASSESS APPLICATIONS
- Combine software systems, including operating systems and communication systems
- Differentiate multiple types of application software
- Select web-based applications
- Propose open-source, in-house, and proprietary application solutions
- Construct MS Access databases to organize data
CATEGORIZE SECURITY AND CONTROL COMPONENTS
- Assess the role of IT security in the business
- Demonstrate data integrity, privacy, confidentiality, and security principles
- Propose security components of a system
- Categorize multiple levels of controls (access, application, system)
- Contrast automated controls vs. manual controls
- Evaluate processing controls and program change controls
- Implement trust services (Web and System)
- Interpret the role of IT in information reporting, including real-time access, remote access, information dashboards, spreadsheets, report generation, and XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language)

- This course fulfills the CPA requirement for Information Technology. This course CANNOT be transferred into the Accounting or Finance diploma. Class WILL NOT be held on Monday, September 30th (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation), Monday, October 14th (Thanksgiving Monday), and Monday, November 11th (Remembrance Day). Material for these weeks will be covered through the use of recorded lectures. The following dates will be HELD IN-CLASS at the Burnaby Campus. Monday, September 9th (18:00 – 22:00), Monday, September 23rd (18:00 – 22:00), Monday, October 7th (18:00 – 22:00), Monday, October 21st (18:00 – 22:00), Mid-Term: Monday, October 28th (18:00 – 22:00), Monday, November 4th (18:00 – 22:00), Monday, November 18th (18:00 – 22:00), Monday, December 2nd (18:00 – 22:00), and Final: Monday, December 16th. You will be expected to be available and online on the posted days and times shown on your registration schedule. It is important you have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. Course content, type and quality of assignments, and general standards for this online course are the same as classroom courses. To be successful in this online course, plan to spend 7-10 hours per week on your studies, or more if it’s a condensed course, starting Week 1.
